Sandman is the legacy name of several different characters in the DC Universe.

In-universe, the earliest historical source of the name was the mythological figure Dream of the Endless, the personification of dreaming, and it was only one of his many names. Upon his death, all of his names and titles were passed down to his successor/reincarnation, Daniel Hall. His name was often associated with sleep.

The codename Sandman, along with the character of Wesley Dodds, was created by Gardner Fox and Bert Christman, first appearing in Adventure Comics #40 (1939).
Jack Kirby reinvented the character as Garrett Sanford in Sandman #1 (1974).
Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg began using the name for their Dream concept in Sandman (Volume 2) #1 (1989).
