The Cavalier is an overdramatic swashbuckling enemy of Batman. Originally, Mortimer Drake was a wealthy collector of curios with an exotic and idiosyncratic taste. When he found himself unable to add certain prized items to his private museum through legal means, Drake adopted the guise of a modern-day Musketeer and embarked on a crime spree that ultimately brought him into conflict with the Dark Knight. Eventually, he was revealed to be in a secret homosexual relationship with fellow Gotham City crook Captain Stingaree. Drake would later be briefly succeeded by Hudson Pyle, a stuntman-turned vigilante who ultimately died whilst sacrificing himself to save another. He has been a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains.

The Cavalier was created by Don C. Cameron and Bob Kane, first appearing in Detective Comics #81 (1943).
