The Virtual World, also known as Cyberspace, is the digital realm which connects all computers and other machines.
History
Pre-Flashpoint
In the autumn of 1987, Ritchie Simpson completed a machine that allowed him to upload his consciousness into the cyberworld. His long-time friend, John Constantine, asked him to search for information about the Resurrection Crusade deep within the World Wide Web. However, the Crusaders' systems were booby-trapped, causing Ritchie's physical body to burn to death while his spirit became trapped within the Computer World.[1]
Ten months later, Constantine prepared for his final confrontation with Nergal by uploading himself into Cyberspace and allowing Ritchie's consciousness to inhabit his human body. John then tricked Nergal into following him into the Virtual World, trapping the demon within the digital plane of existence, while he returned to his body and Ritchie possessed Nergal's form.[2]

Notes
- During his first appearance from Hellblazer #7, Ritchie Simpson referred to this realm as the "Fifth Dimension," which, however, is a whole different plane of existence within the Multiverse.
- This plane of existence is not to be confused with the alternate Post-Flashpoint reality known as the Digiverse.
- Like dreams with the Dreaming and mindscapes with the Collective Unconscious, each computer-based landscape is technically part of the Virtual World and counts as an actual appearance of this realm.
