Manhunter is an legacy codename used by several characters in the DC Universe.

In-universe, the earliest historical source of the name was the group known as the Manhunters, an intergalactic police force made up of androids created by the Guardians of the Universe. For thousands of years, they served the Guardians well, as they also inspired a Manhunter Cult on Earth during Millennium, as well as on Mars, resulting in the creation of Martian Manhunters. However, their programming was corrupted; their mantra, "No Man Escapes The Manhunters", became more important to them than seeing justice done. Their turning evil led to them massacring an entire sector, and they were replaced by the Green Lantern Corps, and they frequently battle them. They reside on the planet Biot.

Manhunter was created by Tex Blaisdell and Alex Kotzky, first appearing in the Quality Comics publication Police Comics #8 (1942).
The Manhunters were created by Jack Kirby, first appearing in 1st Issue Special #5 (1977).
