Karshon was a normal tiger shark until a radioactive waste spill super-evolved him into an anthropomorphic being named the Shark. This enhanced his regular bestial abilities, and along with them he gained new abilities, like psychokinesis. He used his powers to make himself appear more human and adopted the name "T.S. Smith", with "T.S." standing for "Tiger Shark." He eventually became an enemy of both Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Aquaman, and has been a member of both the Weaponers of Qward and the Secret Society of Super-Villains. His Prime Earth counterpart later became an occasional opponent to the Flash and a member of the Suicide Squad.

A female version of the character was later introduced in the DCEU film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Karshon was created by Gil Kane and John Broome, and first appeared in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #24 (1963).
