Clotho is one of the Moirai, the Fates of Greek antiquity. Alongside her sisters Atropos and Lakhesis, Clotho, she measured out lives on the Thread of Life. Clotho "the spinner" spun the thread and created the life to come. The fates are a common triumvirate in European myth and are sometimes equated to the Morrigan and the Kindly Ones.

The Fates were first adapted by David Vern Reed and Walt Simonson in Batman #300 (1978).
