A Banshee is a female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member, usually by screaming.

The DC Universe introduced a super-villain called Silver Banshee in the Modern Age. Siobhan McDougal was born in a Irish clan whose first-born children inherits the powers of the banshee and ascend to leadership through a mystic ritual. While performing the ritual without her uncle's consent, her brother interrupted it, causing her to be sent to the Underworld for centuries.

Eventually, the Crone bestowed her the powers of the Silver Banshee so that she could extract her revenge on her brother and uncle while also testing her. Because of the banshee curse, Siobhan is able to emit high-frequency sound waves through her scream, strong enough to kill a person. In her full Banshee form, Siobhan transforms into a black and white skeletal being. In the New 52 reboot, Siobhan's father was known as the Black Banshee.
