Baron Tyme trapped in the Dark Dimension
The Shadowlands is a metaphysical realm of darkness, born from Eclipso's fall from Heaven, shaped by his mind and the hatred stored within his Black Diamond. The realm serves as both a psychic prison and a living extension of his vengeful consciousness, as well as a power source for various Metahumans and Magic users.[2][3]

Post-Flashpoint
Origin
The Shadowlands originated in the gravity well caused by Eclipso's fall from Heaven. This scar in spacetime became the only place capable of containing his vast, multidimensional mind, so it grew without limits and became the Shadowlands. It is also the inner reflection of the Black Diamond Eclipso carries within him, a vessel of his hatred and resentment toward his divine father. Entering the realm means entering Eclipso's inner hatred.[2][3]
All In
Seeking a cure for Hope O'Dare's mysterious, terminal illness, Richard Swift, also known as The Shade - a metahuman capable of channeling the power of the Shadowlands, ventured deeper into the realm than ever before. There, Eclipso manifested and revealed the Shadowlands to be an extension of his own essence, born from his fall from divinity. Viewing the realm as his personal dominion, Eclipso expressed fury at magicians and metahumans exploiting its power without his sanction. To reassert control, Eclipso forced Swift into service as the Shadowlands' “guard dog,” compelling him to remain within its depths for what, in the realm's altered flow of time, amounted to years.
When the War of the Moon erupted, Swift was ordered to intercept and annihilate any of Wally West's temporal clones who breach the realm during their war. Acting under compulsion, The Shade eviscerated each intruding clone, preventing them from using the Shadowlands as a shortcut or flanking route against Eclipso's forces. This prolonged slaughter, experienced by Swift as years of unbroken combat, both weakened the clone army and deepened a psychological toll on Swift.[2]
Arrowverse
In the Stargirl TV series, Shadowlands is an obscure realm of existence where Eclipso was born. It is also the source of energy of Richard Swift aka The Shade, who eventually banished Doctor Mid-Nite to this realm. Years later, Shade saved the superhero from Eclipso's wrath along with Stargirl and other members of the Justice Society of America.[4]

Notes
- After the All In initiative, the Shadowlands was reimagined as the externalized mind of Eclipso and retconned into his origin - his consciousness being too vast for four dimensions, spilling into a realm of living darkness.[2][3]
